Players choose a character and compete in various game. But, instead, the studio continues to keep bringing improvements and content to players. This is an action driving game in which players compete to become the Destruction Allstars champion. It would have been easy to throw in the towel when it launched to middling reviews. Regardless, I admire Lucid Games’ dedication to Destruction AllStars. However, since Sony doesn’t publish player counts, it’s hard to gauge how well that’s worked out. ![]() It looks like the studio was banking on the relaunch of PS Plus to bring new Extra and Premium tier players to the game. Many vehicular combat fans had hoped this game would project Twisted Metal vibes, and this is anything but that. It also continues to lean heavily into the Fortnite aesthetic that turned many players off. Earlier this year, there were rumors that the game would transition to a F2P model, but that hasn’t happened yet. Despite being a paid game, the progression model and premium currency reek of free-to-play. For one, though it’s included as part of PlayStation Plus Extra, it still costs $19.99 to purchase outright ($39.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition). Taking out that team awards bonus points. Here’s a breakdown of these new special rules: Team Targets (Mayhem Trios) Each team is given a rival team to target. It now has seasonal content and a Battle Pass, and there are multiple progression systems that net players new cosmetics.ĭespite Lucid Games’ enthusiasm, there are still issues with the game. The idea behind these special rules is to give players ways to earn extra points during a game of Destruction AllStars by mixing up their playstyles a little. At that point, Destruction AllStars turns into a much more intense game of Frogger that’s not particularly very good. While many thought it would be quickly abandoned, Destruction AllStars has come a long way since its shaky launch, and Lucid Games continues to add new features and content. After getting in a crash that totals your car, you’re ejected from your vehicle and have to run around the map in search of a new one while avoiding the incoming traffic. They each have their own movement abilities and special cars. Sony today announced that Destruction AllStars, originally intended to be a PlayStation 5 launch title, has instead been delayed. At the beginning of each match, you chose a character to play as from a diverse cast of drivers. What’s unfortunate for the game is that, outside of the driving and crashes, it’s not as enjoyable as I had hoped. Each game was about chasing the high given from those big car wrecks, so each time things didn’t hit as hard as I wanted, I was motivated to look for another unsuspecting driver. The hyper-stylized vehicular combat game is full of monster-sized cars, loud crashes, and bright colors. Setting up the angles and getting the momentum right weren’t things I was thinking about until then, but once it clicked, I was hooked. Destruction AllStars is a chaotic video game, but probably not in the way Sony intended. The entire thing clicked for me about two hours into my playtime after a particularly satisfying collision. ![]() ![]() ![]() The driving is responsive and fast-paced, it has a style that makes the characters stand out, and running around on foot as vehicles. This is an odd oversight in design for a game about being conscious of your position relative to everything else on the map and the game is worse for it.ĭestruction AllStars is about the mastery of momentum and angles, so if you’re struggling to get those things right, you might have some trouble with the game. At a base level, Destruction AllStars is a well-designed game. So, the only way to look is to use the handbrake and pull a 180 to change direction. Because you can’t look around, you also can’t see if anyone is following you hoping to get the jump. I’m all for changing up the controls to match the need of the game, but it made things hard to see. However, the boosts are mapped to the right thumbstick which means that when driving, there is absolutely no camera control. That’s not entirely a fault of the game as skill and practice definitely play a part in it. Lining things up perfectly to have a major crash feels great, but nine times out of ten, you’re going to miss entirely, or simply give a little love tap to the car you were planning on wrecking. There are two types of boosts for regular cars: forward boosts which, as you may have guessed, propel you forward, and side boosts which help you slam into cars to your left and right or allow you to narrowly avoid being slammed yourself.
